I've written a couple novella about Captain Ngola, a black sea captain who was once a slave in the Caribbean but took command of his own destiny by stealing a ship off the coast of West Africa. He now fights Portuguese slavers as an unofficial part of Great Britain's West Africa Squadron.
To me, he's a lot like Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian. If life had turned out differently, he would have been a much simpler man. But it didn't. So now he's commander of a ship and frequently crosses the paths of sorcerers and all things magical in his quest to end the Portuguese slavers' hold on West Africa.
